Colbert's Copyright

I have to say, these videos put a whole new perspective on copyright law. Put simply, the dramatic difference from the original, combined with the clear amount of effort involved, makes a great case for these being new products. Clearly, as Lessig points out, these laws are severely outdated. I am not sure how they could be rewritten, but I think society would be missing out on great art if laws successfully stopped this kind of free expression. Personally, I think these remixes add value to our world. Make it richer and more interesting. I do not have the artistry to do this, but I truly enjoy watching other's works. It would be a shame to stop them. I agree with Lessig, let's change the laws.

  1. Angie, you make a great point in looking at the effort that's gone into making these remixes. These people are not just stealing material and regurgitating verbatim, they are creating a completely new product that represents their own vision.

  2. Angie,

I know exactly what you mean when you said, "I do not have the artistry to do this, but I truly enjoy watching other's works" because I am the same way. I think it's really fascinating how people can make remixes, and they are fun to watch. I like the points that you made!
