The first thing that hit me watching this video was Kelly's statement, "Its amazing but we are not amazed." I think along those lines everytime I think back in time. I sit at the school's computer and get frustrated by the load time compared to my home computer. Not long ago the speed of the school's computer would have been unimaginable. How quickly what is new becomes yesterday's news. I think the transformation to be Kelly spoke about has already begun. More and more things are linked to the web. Most people assume that everyone has a web profile, not everyone does but the assumption is there. I went to my favorite deli yesterday and chastised them because they weren't on Facebook. I want to connect that part of my life to my web life. Kelly talked about personalization and willingness to share. I admit this is a conflict for me. I want privacy, but I want a tailored experience. While most spam irritates me in my junk folder, I am especially annoyed by spam that seems to think I am a sixty-year old male. What struck me most was Kelly's assertion that the we will become co-dependent with the web. I feel that day is fast approaching, if it isnt already here. I feel weird if I am unplugged for too long.
When I am talking to a friend and we cannot remember the name of a song, we no longer allow that state of confusion to last. It is too easy to "Google it". I no longer say, you have to see what Jon Stewart said last night...I link my friends directly to the clip. It is a fundamental change in how I communicate. "It is amazing but we are not amazed."(Kelly)
Kelly,Kevin." Next 5000 Days of the Internet." Ted.com. 2007. February 11,2010. Web.
It truly is amazing that we are not amazed. I remember in elementary school learning how to type on an alpha smart and having to stand in line to plug that into one of the few desk tops that the school had. Now it is not uncommon to have at least two computer labs in even the smallest of schools. Not to mention having assignments hand written or even notes taken by hand are a thing of the past.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that co-dependence is rapidly approaching our society. I only use my cell phone and do not have a house phone. I forgot my phone the other day when I went off to work and immediately felt naked. I usually don't use my phone at work but I still felt that I was out of touch because my phone was not on my person. Scary to think really.
It's true though. If you want the benefits the web can offer, you have to give something up. I'm sure anyone is reluctant to be so transparent on the machine as Kelly would say. It's a huge risk for us to be put out there like that. The real fear in doing so is security. Who's going to do what with that information? I think that's going to be one the biggest issues with "The One." It's going to have everything about anything; sure, that's great and all but is it going to protect us as well? I would've liked it if Kelly went further into detail with that although I'm sure he touched it a bit when he mentioned the machine's ability to collect any data like "Who's searching whom?"
