Roker is mad at Mayor DiBlasio… And why I can see his point,
there’s another side.
Much has been said about how this is the first Mayor in a
long time who is concerned about the poor/working class. And maybe this is a
sign of that.
Enjoying Snow Days is a privilege that many don’t have.
For many working parents, school is child care, the only
child care they can afford. Often, service jobs require their employees to work
no matter the weather (even if there are no customers to serve.) And if kids
don’t have school that leads to tough choices for Mom and Dad. Miss work and
miss pay? Miss work and risk losing that job?
These are real life choices that leave many parents praying
schools will be open no matter what.
Not to mention, for many students the school’s breakfast and
lunch are their only guaranteed meal.
Perhaps DiBlasio considered this. Perhaps he considered that
if those that could stayed off the roads; buses could safely deliver students to
school (which they seem to have done) and those students and parents that NEED
schools open can benefit. If you really want your kid home, keep them
home ( I did). But think about the hardship a snow day is for many.
Mr. Roker, I love you, but maybe the Mayor understands
something you don’t.
