First of all, I am of two minds when it comes to street art in general. On one hand, I admire the talent and skill of many street artists. On the other, I think defacing public and private property is wrong. The expense involved in cleaning up graffiti is ridiculous. Also, your art is unlikely to survive because more often than not it is painted over. Still, there are many talented street artists that would do well if there were a way for them to legally channel their energies.
I also think the Obama photo is a difficult case.Clearly it was dramatically altered and did not harm the original. However, it was not a purely original creation. The internet and other technoligies make it harder and harder to protect copyright. It also in some ways makes it less neccessary. I am fascinated by these cases but have no idea the right or wrong here. Altering iconic images is not in any way new, and is an accepted form of art. I only know that I will pay more attention in the future.
