I think I have finally calmed down enough to write about
yesterday’s VRA decision by SCOTUS, so…here it goes…
EXPLETIVE…EXPLETIVE… just kidding, sorta.
Today, I read several quotes of Scalia’s dissent on
DOMA. He argued that the court had no
right to strike down Congress’ lawmaking decisions when it comes to DOMA, even
if said decision has a basis in the Constitution…
Yesterday, he (along with four others) struck down Congress’
formula in section four of the VRA. Not for any "this is unconstitutional on its face" reasons. Simply because he believed Congress can’t be trusted to create such a
formula…that it’s outdated and HE is forced to make them create a new one…
The cognitive dissonance here is astounding even for Scalia.
What is painfully clear is that he was willing to do whatever mental gymnastics
he needed to do to take away people's rights. That’s not what he calls it. But,
of course, that is what happened. This was politically motivated more than
anything. This is a bald-faced attempt to allow the GOP to gain electoral
advantage by disenfranchising American citizens.
We cannot allow this affront to all that is decent in
America to stand. So sign this petition to demand that a new formula be
created. Try to get a Constitutional Amendment passed (SCOTUS would be rendered
moot). Vote in 2014. Vote in 2014.
March. Fight. Scream. Oh, and did I mention? VOTE IN 2014. Now We Fight. Now We Stand. We Can Be Idle No More. The Struggle Continues.
